Change AirPods Pro ear tips: how to find the right size

4 min read

Are the ear tips on your AirPods Pro loose or torn, or do you want to try a different size? The silicone tips, also known as earbud tips, can be swapped in a few seconds. Here’s how to change your AirPods Pro ear tips and find the right size.

Which sizes are available

Each model has its own ear tips. Size M is always fitted at the factory, and the other sizes come in the box.

  • AirPods Pro 1: S, M and L
  • AirPods Pro 2 (Lightning and USB-C): XS, S, M and L
  • AirPods Pro 3: XXS, XS, S, M and L

The ear tips only fit their own model. For example, the ones for AirPods Pro 3 are softer than those for AirPods Pro 2. You can see which size is currently fitted on the inside: carefully fold back the edge of the ear tip, and the size is printed there.

Change AirPods Pro ear tips: how it works

Remove an ear tip:

  1. Hold the AirPod firmly in one hand.
  2. With your other hand, grip the ear tip right at the bottom, where it attaches to the AirPod.
  3. Pull it straight off with steady pressure. Don’t twist it and don’t pull on the thin edge.

If it slips through your fingers, use a clean, lint-free cloth to help. Or fold the edge outwards so you can grip the ear tip more easily at the bottom.

Attach an ear tip:

  1. The connector on the AirPod is oval. Line up the ear tip so that it fits exactly.
  2. Press it on until you feel and hear it click into place.
  3. Pull on it gently to check that it’s secure.

Find the right size

Start with M and wear the AirPods for 10 to 15 minutes as normal, for example while walking. You’ll soon notice whether the size is right:

  • Too small: the AirPods don’t stay in properly and easily fall out when you move your head. The sound seems thin.
  • Too big: they press and feel uncomfortable after a while.
  • Right: the AirPods sit comfortably and securely without pressing.

Your two ears may be different. It’s perfectly fine to use different sizes on the left and right.

Fit test on your iPhone

If you like, your iPhone can check whether the ear tips seal well:

  1. Put in both AirPods and connect them to your iPhone.
  2. Open “Settings” and tap the name of your AirPods near the top.
  3. On AirPods Pro 1 and Pro 2, tap “Ear Tip Fit Test”; on AirPods Pro 3, tap “Test Acoustic Seal”.
  4. Follow the instructions and tap the play button.

If the test suggests a change, first put the AirPods in again: ear tip into the ear canal, turn the stem slightly towards your face and press gently. If the result stays the same, try a different size. On AirPods Pro 3, a different size may work best for heart rate measurement than for sound.

Clean the ear tips

Remove the ear tips and rinse them with clean water only, without soap or cleaner. Dry them with a soft, lint-free cloth and only put them back on once they’re completely dry. Don’t hold the AirPod itself under running water. There’s more on this in the guide Clean AirPods.

And AirPods without Pro?

AirPods 1, 2, 3 and 4 don’t have ear tips. Their shape is fixed, and there’s no other size. If they don’t fit you well, the comparison AirPods 4 or AirPods Pro will help you choose.

If the problem isn’t the ear tip but a faulty or lost AirPod, you don’t need a new pair. At Lostpod, you can get the left or right AirPod and the charging case individually, as a genuine replacement part. You’ll find them, for example, for AirPods Pro 1, AirPods Pro 2 (Lightning), AirPods Pro 2 (USB-C) and AirPods Pro 3.

Frequently asked questions

Which size is fitted on AirPods Pro?

At the factory, it’s always M. The size is printed on the inside of the ear tip when you carefully fold back the edge.

Do AirPods Pro 2 ear tips fit AirPods Pro 3?

No. The ear tips are made specifically for each model and can’t be swapped between models. When buying new ear tips, make sure they fit your model.

My AirPods Pro fall out of my ears. What helps?

Try the next size and put the AirPods in correctly: into the ear canal, turn the stem slightly towards your face, press gently. Then take the fit test on your iPhone.

How often should I change the ear tips?

There’s no fixed rule. Replace them if they’re torn or misshapen or no longer seal well.
